Rhinitis is a chronic disease that affects millions of Americans each year. The symptoms of this condition include nasal obstruction, congestion, and rhinorrhea. It can also exacerbate other medical conditions such as asthma. There are many medications that can be used to treat rhinitis. These include intranasal corticosteroids, oral and topical antihistamines, and decongestants.비염한의원
There are two main types of rhinitis: allergic and nonallergic. Allergic rhinitis is caused by an allergic reaction to an allergen. Symptoms of allergy rhinitis can range from mild to severe, depending on the patient’s specific allergies. Allergy rhinitis occurs more commonly in children, although it is a serious condition that can affect adults as well. To diagnose allergic rhinitis, a doctor or health care professional will perform a skin test to detect the underlying cause of the disease. Other methods of diagnosing the condition include an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor) or a health care provider who specializes in respiratory diseases.
Approximately 60% of the population has some form of rhinitis. Most rhinitis is caused by a virus, but some can be caused by a more chronic or recurring infection. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment options may include a decongestant or nasal surgery. Typically, the disease will resolve on its own, but if the symptoms persist, decongestants and other medication may be used to treat it. If the disease is mild, it can often be treated with a simple home remedy, such as salt water irrigation.
Intranasal cromolyn, which is safe for use by the general population, is not considered a first-line therapy for allergy rhinitis. However, intranasal corticosteroids are effective in treating mild to moderate rhinitis.
Other pharmacologic treatments for allergic rhinitis include intranasal corticosteroids, leukotriene receptor antagonists, and azelastine/fluticasone. Antihistamines are also frequently prescribed to patients who experience postnasal drip. Postnasal drip is the accumulation of mucus in the nasal cavity that can irritate the lining of the throat. When this occurs, it can lead to chronic sore throat and cough.
Nasal saline irrigation is also used to treat chronic rhinorrhea. Patients are usually given this type of treatment as an adjuvant to other therapies, but a study found that it is more effective when used in conjunction with other medications, such as nasal antihistamines and steroid nasal spray. Surgical procedures such as septoplasty are often done when other, more conservative measures are ineffective.
Surgical techniques can be used to improve the delivery of rinses and medications. This is especially useful in patients with persistent rhinitis. Some studies have reported that neurectomy, or the resection of the vagus nerve, has been shown to be effective in the treatment of rhinitis.
Although there is not a cure for rhinitis, the symptoms can be controlled by taking antihistamines and avoiding known allergens. Patients with allergic rhinitis are at a higher risk of developing eczema. Since antihistamines work best when they are taken before exposure to an allergen, they should be avoided by those who drive.라경찬한의원
